Vienna-based conductor Daniel Gyu-seo Lee was born in Seoul. After his study at the Seoul National University, he moved to Vienna and completed his postgraduate study at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. He was also selected from historic Accademia musicale Chigiana and became a pupil of Maestro Daniele Gatti. He has conducted the Wiener Symphoniker, the Danish Radio Symphony, the Korean National Symphony Orchestras and many others. Last summer, he made his opera debut at the Siena International Music Festival with Rossini «Il signor Bruschino» stage directed by Lorenzo Mariani.
He was nominated to many prominent conducting competitions such as Besançon, Malko, Rachmaninoff Competitions and recently he won the 2nd prize at the Caneres International Music Competition. Since 2014, as Artistic Director of the Orchestral Ensemble Seoul which he founded himself, has attracted attention on the Far-Eastern stage. In 2020, the OES was designated as the Governmental Arts Organization by the Seoul City. From 2018 to 2022, Lee and OES worked on the complete Beethoven Symphony & Piano Concerto cycle with prestigious artists at the Seoul Arts Center.
He is also holding the position of Principal Guest Conductor of the Seoul Soloists from 21/22 season. Furthermore, he is actively having masterclasses for younger protégés and youth orchestras through institutions like Steinway & Sons Korea and the Seoul Arts High School. A recording artist for NCM Klassik, recent releases include Mozart Symphony No.29(2018) and Beethoven Symphony No.3(2022), all with the OES.
Lee started the violin at the age of 5 and served a youth orchestra in his town as a concertmaster for a decade. In Seoul, he studied conducting with Prof. Hun-joung Lim and received Masters degree under Prof. Yun-sung Chang. In Vienna, he studied with Prof. Simeon Pironkoff. He has also benefited from the guidance of Marin Alsop, Tadaaki Otaka, David Robertson, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Marc Piollet and Johannes Prinz(Artistic Director of the Wiener Singverein.) He is the recipient of the Award for the Remarkable Artist of the Year(2018) awarded by the Committee of Korean Arts Critics.
Gyu-Seo is based in Seoul and Vienna.
